Passive fire protection
Firestopping and fire-resistant materials
We seal penetrations, joints and openings in fire compartment walls and floors so that fire and smoke cannot pass into the next space.
Firestopping is the set of fire-resistant materials that close the openings where cables, pipes and ducts pass through fire-rated walls and floors. It restores the fire resistance of the wall or floor, so each fire compartment keeps fire and smoke contained. Pyroprolipsi designs, supplies and installs firestopping and fire-resistant building materials for passive fire protection.
Materials
What we supply and install
We choose the material according to the penetration, the wall or floor and the fire resistance required.
- Fire pillows
- Fire-resistant building materials: sealants, foams, fillers, putties and pipe collars
- Fire boards
- Intumescent paints
How it works
How firestopping protects a building
A building is divided into fire compartments by walls and floors that resist fire for a set time. Every cable or pipe that passes through opens a gap in that boundary. Firestopping closes the gap, so the wall or floor keeps its fire resistance.
Most firestopping materials expand with heat. Pipe collars close the space a plastic pipe leaves when it melts, pillows and fillers seal cable bundles, and intumescent paints form an insulating layer on steel members.
We have installed firestopping and fire-rated partitions in industrial buildings such as those of NIKAS S.A., FINTEXPORT S.A. and AKTINA S.A. At FINTEXPORT we also applied intumescent coatings.
Lifecycle
From the study to maintenance
Passive fire protection starts with the study. Pyroprolipsi's ELOT EN ISO 9001:2015 certification covers the study and design of passive fire protection, and the same team supplies and installs the firestopping.
We combine firestopping with fire-rated doors and fire-rated drywall systems, so each fire compartment is closed properly at walls, doors and penetrations.
Every new penetration in an existing building, such as a new cable or pipe, reopens the compartment boundary. We can restore the firestopping after such works.

Projects
Fire-rated drywall at the National Bank of Greece, Rhodes
At the National Bank of Greece office building on Kyprou Square in Rhodes we installed fire doors, security fire doors and a fire-rated drywall system, among other work.
Fire boards are one of the passive fire protection materials we supply and install.

FAQ
What clients ask us most
What is firestopping?
Firestopping is material that seals the openings in fire-rated walls and floors where cables, pipes or ducts pass through. Without it, fire and smoke travel from one fire compartment to the next through those penetrations, even when the wall itself is fire-rated. It is part of passive fire protection, because it works without detection or activation.
Where does a building need firestopping?
It is needed wherever cables, pipes or ducts cross the boundary of a fire compartment. This usually happens in service shafts, electrical rooms, plant rooms, stairwells and walls between different uses. The fire safety study defines the fire compartments and the fire resistance of each boundary, and so where firestopping is required.
Which firestopping material suits each penetration?
The material depends on what passes through the opening and on the wall or floor. Plastic pipes usually take pipe collars, cable bundles take pillows, fillers or putties, joints and small gaps take sealants or foams, and large openings take fire boards. Each product is always installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
What do intumescent paints do?
Intumescent paints swell when heated and form an insulating layer that slows the temperature rise of the member they cover. They are mainly applied to structural steel, so that it keeps its strength for the time set by the study. The coating thickness depends on the steel section and the fire resistance required.
Do you also install the firestopping?
Yes. Installing firestopping is part of our work, together with supplying the materials and the study of passive fire protection. We take on new projects as well as restoring firestopping after new penetrations in an existing building. Send us drawings or photos of the openings and we will prepare a quote.
